Flavor of the Week 😋: Laying the Cornerstone for What You Intend to Build Next

Last week, we discussed the yin energy of January 2026 as an opportunity for stillness and reflecting on our potential and possibilities. That energy continues this week as we wind down toward our first new moon of 2026. Because the sky is getting darker as the moonlight wanes, we can flow with this energy and continue to slow down or retract our energy inward.
Once the sky is fully dark this weekend, we will be in the void between moon cycles. In the darkness of that womb space is more of the infinite potential we discussed last week. However, this potential energy leads with Capricorn themes, since that’s where the new moon is taking place.
The overarching question to ponder in this time of stillness is: What do I want to build next?
Capricorn energy likes to build gradually over time and wants to make sure that whatever we build will stand the test of time. Capricorn energy builds something that future generations can continue to build on. Capricorn energy, as well as it’s neighbor Aquarius, asks us to think inter-generationally. What’s the longer legacy we will leave behind?
Now, all of this sounds quite grandiose for something that happens at least once a year, lol. But it’s not just another year. It’s a universal 1 year, which is also a major energy of beginning something that will unfold for at least a decade if not longer. And there are other major astrological events happening right now and later in 2026 that make this year quite cosmically potent.
If you choose to work with this Capricorn new moon, here’s another important thing to consider. This particular New Moon asks us to think outside the box. Break the mold and build an original framework, something unique and future focused, not patterned after old, dilapidated structures. This new moon is making the most auspicious aspect with Uranus, the planet of revolution, liberation, futuristic invention, and even genius ideas. So dare to turn the paradigm inside out. Or break it altogether and craft a mosaic of your own imagination.
This kind of reimagining and rebuilding is supported by the new moon’s connection to Neptune and Saturn as well. We could begin to give our abstract dreams a tangible framework or a solid foundation that we can build on in the years to come.
What I learned in architecture school is that a solid foundation begins with a carefully laid cornerstone. The cornerstone is not just the first stone, it’s the stone that will bear the most weight, and it’s the stone that will set the direction of the entire structure, no matter how large.
This Capricorn new moon is one fantastic opportunity to lay a cornerstone in some area of our lives. It can be an internal process you want to start, such as psychological health or development of your spiritual gifts. Or it can be something more external like a relationship, a family, or a career. For some it might even be more concrete like a literal building. The purpose of starting this year with stillness, is so that we have the space for clarity about what we might build next.
I’ll briefly add that this could be a new beginning within an existing structure, such as a new relationship dynamic with an existing relative, a new title or promotion at an existing job, a new chapter in a journey you’ve already been on like graduating from medical school, or just a new sense of self. But that existing structure would have to pass the test of Saturn—is it actually solid, stable, and built with integrity? And does that existing structure truly support who you are now and who you’re becoming and evolving into??
Don’t fret if you haven’t figured out your intention or direction by the new moon this weekend. You won’t start building on the exact new moon, though you might start prospecting and surveying the land, so to speak. And for some people, the right place to set your cornerstone might be revealed in the coming weeks or months. Pay attention to your inner and outer world.
Healing Home 🏡 and Finding Your Place in the World

I introduced this theme on the full moon in the zodiac sign of Cancer on January 3rd. Since Cancer and Capricorn are directly opposite each other on the zodiac wheel, we always get their full and new moons back to back. They are tethered astrologically.
I mentioned how Cancer is the sign of our private lives and our hearth and home, while Capricorn is the sign of our public life and our role in the wider world. Therefore, this new moon is another great time to revisit those journal prompts I shared that week, especially this one:
What old story about my role in society no longer fits who I’m becoming now?
And you can add these new journal prompts as you sit in the dark void, the dark womb of this weekend’s Capricorn new moon:
When I quiet all external expectations, suggestions, and judgements, what new direction is my internal compass strongly magnetized toward?
If I must commit to investing in this path for years to come, does it still seem as appealing to me? Or is it just a cool idea, but not one I want to execute?
How can I be a good ancestor?

The song “Build It Up” by Ingrid Michaelson is very Capricorn new moon, very Healing Home and Finding Your Place in the World. In case it helps, here’s a link to the lyrics.
